Scribd
April 27th, 2008 by abrambletakenhold · No Comments · Web 2.0
Larry Ferlazzo says Scribd is a great tool for English Language Learners (he’s voted it fourth best tool for 2007 for ELL). Why? Because he gets students upload their papers and illustrations, and Scribd immediately also converts it into audio so, in addition to seeing their story, they and others can hear it, too.
Check out this example Larry created for how Scribe can be used for Talking Stories (press the play on the Listen toolbar on the bottom right hand side below categories and tags).

My new challenge
April 20th, 2008 by abrambletakenhold · No Comments · Web 2.0
- My newest challenge is to bring the technology in my classroom into this century. My frustration lies in feeling that most of the people I work with are just starting to “get it”. I also feel like I did 6 years ago or so where I had the interest, enthusiasm but not the tools to use technology in my classroom. Well the tools have finally caught up to where I feel I was back then.
- So now that the district is offering blogs to teachers most teachers define their audience as students or parents, primarily students. They are being used as a classroom webpage with the exception that students can comment, but not comment on comments. The district wiki is set up so that only currently employed teachers can create, join and contribute.
- So where does that leave the kids? Where is Web 2.0 in their education life?

Social Bookmarking - TAGS!
-
- Students working in groups can share their research results and then others can easily access them for their own purposes.
- You can compile a list of resources for a particular class or topic that can be access from any computer.
- Use tags to sort resources. Group One – can tag all their links “group1″ and with one click they will see only their relevant weblinks.
- Shared del.icio.us accounts – one account per class, per school, etc.
- Professional Groups: if a group of teachers has taken on the task of learning more about a particular teaching method they can each contribute their findings and websites to a bookmarking site so that everyone can benefit from everyone else’s time spent researching and sifting through all that is available on the Internet.
- Advanced: If you subscribe to the RSS Feeds of all of your students’ bookmarking pages, you can see when they add items and you can see how their research appears to be progressing, you can even identify if you need to step in tofacilitate some change in research direction.

The call was to take charge of change, advocate for and push for curriculum. While I have no idea if there was any connection, having had students who have threatened others by blogs, IM etc I certainly will continue to do what I can to ensure that children are safe, and taught appropriate behaviors.

Even easier is to use the Windows Sound Recorder – look under accessories in your program menu). What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a new system, built upon current copyright law, that allows you to legally use “some rights reserved” music, movies, images, and other content — all for free.
Where can I find CC-licensed music?
Several sites offer music published under Creative Commons’ flexible copyright licenses. Here are some:
- ccMixter
- Jamendo
- Magnatune
- Simuze
- BeatPick
- CASH Music
- SectionZ
- Opsound
- Jamglue
- Podsafe Audio
- Splice
- Internet Archive’s Netlabels Collection
Can I use any song with a CC license on it?
Almost — you need to make sure that what you want to do with the music is OK under the terms of the particular Creative Commons license it’s under. CC-licensed music isn’t free for all uses, only some — so make sure to check out the terms (you can find these by clicking on each song’s license icon).
Most importantly, you need to use music that is not licensed under a No Derivative Works license. This means that the musician doesn’t want you to change, transform, or make a derivative work using their music. Under CC licenses, synching the music to images amounts to transforming the music, so you can’t legally use a song under a CC No Derivative Works license in your video.
Also, make sure to properly credit the musician and the track, as well as express the CC license the track is under. For example, you might include text like this at the end of your video:
This video features the song “Desaprendere (Treatment)” by fourstones, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial license.

Here is where you can use http://keepvid.com/ (also blocked at school) – allows you to download videos from places such as YouTube which is blocked at school and bring it in from home. You have control over what your students see (and help protect your career).
Safer is TeacherTube which is a library of video lessons from teachers.
